British Values in the Early Years

In our Early Years settings, British Values are woven naturally into everyday experiences. Through play, exploration and positive relationships, our youngest children begin to understand how to be kind, confident and responsible members of their community

Individual Liberty

In Early Years, children are encouraged to make choices throughout the day — from selecting activities to choosing how they learn and play.

We support children to develop confidence in expressing their ideas, preferences and feelings. They are encouraged to talk about their thoughts, ask questions and try new experiences in a safe and nurturing environment.

Children learn that their voice matters and that it is okay to have their own opinions.

The Rule of Law

Our golden rules help children understand clear and consistent expectations.

Through daily routines, stories and discussions, children learn why rules are important, how they keep us safe and how they help everyone learn happily together. Adults model positive behaviour and support children to understand right from wrong in an age-appropriate way.

Children begin to understand that rules apply to everyone and that there are natural consequences when expectations are not met.

Democracy

Even our youngest children experience democracy in action.

Children are given opportunities to share their ideas, vote for stories or activities, and help make simple decisions about their environment. Circle times and group discussions encourage children to listen to others, take turns and understand that different people may have different ideas.

They learn that everyone’s voice is important.

Tolerance

We celebrate the uniqueness of every child and family within our nursery community.

Through stories, celebrations, music and creative experiences, children learn about different cultures, traditions and ways of life. We help children understand that people may look different, speak different languages or have different beliefs — and that these differences make our world special.

Children are supported to show kindness and curiosity rather than judgement.

Mutual Respect

Respect begins with simple daily interactions — sharing, taking turns, using kind words and caring for our environment.

Children learn to value one another and to understand that fairness means helping everyone get what they need to succeed. Our inclusive approach ensures all children feel safe, valued and supported.

By the time children leave our Early Years setting, they are developing the confidence, empathy and understanding needed to continue their journey as thoughtful and respectful members of society.
